Needs and Guidelines for Muaythai Teacher Development in Accordance with Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008)

Abstract

This research aimed to study Muaythai teacher’s needs, compare their needs, and propose the guidelines for Muaythai teacher development in accordance with Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008). The 321 populations used in this research comprised school directors, assistants to the director for academic affairs, and physical education teachers under Ang Thong Primary Educational Service Area Office. A constructed questionnaire was used as a tool of this study. The data analysis was conducted in terms of frequency distribution, percentage, arithmetic average, standard deviation, t-test independent, one way analysis of variance, and modified priority needs index (PNI_Modified). The findings revealed that in relation to Muaythai teacher development needs the expected condition was found at a highest level as a whole (μ =4.59, σ=.31), and the actual condition was found at a moderate level as a whole (μ =2.73, σ= 0.61). The most important aspect was equipment and facility (PNI=0.882) and next was learning management (PNI=0.832). No significant differences of both expected and actual conditions were found in different genders of school directors, assistants to the director for academic affairs, and physical education teachers at the level of .05. No significant differences of actual conditions were also found in different ages and experience of school directors, assistants to the director for academic affairs, and physical education teachers at the level of .05 but significant differences of expected conditions were found in different ages and experience of those at the level of .05. Significant differences of both expected and actual conditions were found in different educational degrees of school directors, assistants to the director for academic affairs, and physical education teachers at the level of .05; however, no significant difference of both expected and actual conditions were found in different positions of those at the level of .05. The guidelines for Muaythai teacher development in accordance with Basic Education Core Curriculum B.E. 2551 (A.D. 2008) revealed as follows: 1. Curriculum: The Muaythai teachers should have an opportunity to participate in all levels of Muaythai curriculum construction and they should hold discussion to construct the curriculum for schools in the same direction in order to develop knowledge (A), process (P) and attitude (A). 2. Teacher: The Muaythai teachers should be the real experienced persons and able to teach students. They should be sent to training or seminar for development and upgraded for A, B, or C licenses. Also, the institutions responsible for producing teachers and personnel in physical education should put Muaythai as one of compulsory courses in the curriculum. 3. Equipment and Facility: The public and private sectors along with the related organizations should build cooperation for enhancing Muaythai learning and teaching management in terms of school equipment and facility. 4. Learning and Teaching Management: The Muaythai teachers should achieve clear understanding of curriculum and activity integration with other courses. The Muaythai course should be provided for the primary and secondary school level students at least one credit and should be prepared for all student age levels in order to create students confidence and standardize the Muaythai learning and teaching management. 5. Measurement and Evaluation: The Muaythai teachers should have right understanding of measurement and evaluation and be able to make evaluation tools such as behavior observation, student’s expected qualification measurement, physical fitness test, evaluation of physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics for Muaythai course in both theoretical and practical contents in the same direction.
