Abstract
Objective: To study the factors affecting residents and fellows' research conduct in Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiology, Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University.
Material and Method: A total of 38 residents and fellows of the 2553 academic year were recruited (Subjects); to answer the questionnaires regarding personal information, the attitudes on research, and the obstacles to conduct research in the Department. The data was analyzed as frequency distribution, percentage, mean, and standard deviation using STATA 11.
Results: Majority of subjects (76.31%) were in age range of 25 – 30 years, with female : male ratio 71.05% : 28.95%. From 12 questions regarding the attitudes on research, the 4 questions received highest scores were: the advisor was kind and nice to work with (mean 3.39 from 4), the advisor provided time and made the research easier (3.34), the conducted research was useful for the Department (3.05) and for the subjects themselves (3.00). The question whether the subjects wanted to change their advisors received the lowest score (1.17). From 19 questions concerning problems and obstacles to conduct research, the 6 question received highest scores were: the Department should provide specific time period for doing research (mean 4.39 from 5), plenty of clinical service affected the research conduct (4.28), subjects were lack of knowledge about necessary biomedical statistics (3.92), subjects agreed to present research proposal in the second year of residency training (3.92), subjects had difficulty in finding the patients’ files (3.81), and difficulty in appointing the biomedical statistician (3.78).
Conclusion: Residents and fellows had excellent attitude to their advisors, and did not want to change. The obstacles in conducting research related to plenty of clinical service that resulted in insufficient research time. The Department should consider arranging specific research time period for residents and fellows.
