Abstract

Background: There is variation in clinical presentations of chronic rhinitis patients from mild to severe symptoms which affect the quality of life in different degrees.

Objective: To study the correlation among size, type of positive skin prick test to common aeroallergens, and other factors that affect the quality of life in chronic rhinitis patients.

Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study in new patients who were diagnosed chronic rhinitis at adult allergy clinic, Ramathibodi Hospital, from August 2017 to December 2017. Quality of life, severity of clinical presentation, and skin prick test results of patients were collected

Results: Of 130 patients, 85 (65.4%) were female. Result showed that the type and size of aeroallergen sensitization gave a positive result, and has inverse correlation with quality of life in chronic rhinitis patients, but only mite (Der f) and cockroach (r = -0.283 to -0.234, P < 0.05) However, the severity of nasal (Total nasal symptom score, TNSS) and other symptoms (Total other symptom score, TOSS) were significantly difference between TNSS > 6, TNSS ≤ 6 and TOSS > 6, TOSS ≤ 6. The result showed that patients with TNSS > 6 and TOSS > 6 had significantly lower function in every aspects in a quality of life (P < 0.05) except quality of life about absenteeism (P = 0.16).

Conclusions: This study showed that type and size of positive skin prick test were not correlated to quality of life. However, severity of symptom were correlated with quality of life in chronic rhinitis patients.
