Quality of Life of Parents of Children with Newly Diagnosed Learning Disorders (LD)

Abstract

Objectives: 1 To compare the quality of life (QOL) of parents who were children with newly diagnosed learning disorder (LD) parents who were children with newly diagnosed other psychiatric disorders 2 to evaluate the socio-demographic characteristics on their QOL.


Method: This was a cross-sectional study. From September to December 2011, 30 parents of children consecutively diagnosed as having LD and 30 other psychiatric disorders were enrolled. Parent’s QOL were measured by a selected factors questionnaire and the Pictorial Thai Quality of Life. Statistical Analysis Used: descriptive statistics include frequency, percentage, and analyzed statistics in clude Pearson Chi-Square and Fisher’s Exact Test.


Results: The study found that no significant different on socio-demographic characteristics on both group except grade. The physical, cognitive, affective, social, economic aspects and overall of their quality of life were mid-range but self esteem was low. Both groups not significant different in QOL. Only parent’s status was related to the physical aspect or their quality of life.


Conclusions: The present study provide quality of life of parenting children with newly diagnosed LD and compared to parenting children with newly diagnosed other psychiatric disorders. Parenting children with newly diagnosed LD need to be addressed by physicians for improving QOL. The study identified marital status that need to be addressed and further to evaluate this domain.
