Opera Paraphrase for Piano in the First Half of the 19th Century
Abstract
The opera paraphrase was developed from the art of improvisation and became one of the most beloved genres of piano music in the first half of the 19th century. Many great pianists such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Woelfl, Friedrich Kalkbrenner, Camille Pleyel, Carl Czerny, Franz Hunten, Ignaz Moscheles, Henri Herz, Franz Liszt, and Sigismund Thalberg arranged favorite opera themes for piano compositions under various titles such as Variation, Fantasy, Potpourri, Capriccio, Illustration, Souvenir, Réminiscence and Paraphrase. Opera paraphrases illustrate not only brilliant and virtuosic techniques but also imitate vocal performance practice directly through articulation, phrasing, embellishment and agogic nuances. These notated expression markings could offer important contemporary evidence concerning the interpretation of the original works.
