Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze Michael Brecker's improvising style in Charlie's Parker's composition “Moose the Mooche”. The analysis defines and describes certain melodic  devices which are based and relying on arpeggio, blues, melodic minor, pentatonic scales and chord
substitution. Through the analysis it was discovered that Michael Brecker used various styles of vocabulary from blues and bebop idioms to more modern jazz concepts such as pentatonic and triadic concepts. The study also demonstrates how Michael Brecker employed those devices to create dissonant tension over background harmony, which is an important technique in jazz vocabulary nowadays.
