Abstract

The purpose of this research is to study and analyze the key features of motives or licks that are unique to improvisation from six jazz instrumental improvisations adapted specifically for vocal improvisation or scat singing exercises. The motives were chosen carefully to create twenty four exercises for vocal range between G3-E6. Each exercise is characterized by a particular melody, using sequence and transposition to cover all of the keys. The readers should feel free to use appropriate syllables and ranges. The twenty four exercises from the study will serve as a means through which vocalists can gain a working knowledge of common jazz styles and vocabulary and using muscle memory to develop skills essential to improved performance. There are four levels of difficulty which the readers may choose from, depending on their abilities.
