Abstract

Objective: To study the efficacy of the adaptive equipment designed by the occupational therapist to increase range of motion in chronic stroke patients.

Methods: Demographic data, passive range of motion (PROM) and Motor Assessment Scale (MAS)of 40 participants were recorded. The participants and their caregivers were asked to assemble the adaptive equipment. Manual book and materials were provided. Home program  exercise was demonstrated. After 30 days, PROM and MAS were reassessed. The satisfaction score was evaluated at the end of study.

Results: The participants with an average age of 54.1±13.9 years were recruited. Onset was 13 (range 6-240) months. The PROM of the shoulder and the elbow joints shows no significant improvement while the MAS improved significantly (p-value <0.001). Most participants (82%) evaluated very satisfied and 88% of them were confident to use these adaptive equipment at home.

Conclusions: The adaptive equipment designed by the occupational therapist can be used to increase the functions of the upper extremity in chronic stroke patients. Most of the participants have  confidence of using the adaptive equipment at home under supervision of care givers. Further study should be compared to standard equipment of Occupational Therapy.
