Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a significant problem of patients with limited mobilization. The purpose of this article is to review about roles of community health nurses in prevention of urinary tract  infection in these patients.  Bacteriuria caused by Escherichia Coli (E. coli) leads to one of the most antibiotic resistance for UTI; consequently, affecting treatment prognosis, medical expenses and mortality from disease progression and bacteremia. Urinary leakage causes skin irritation, eventually progresses to UTI. The high risk for this condition mostly occurs in bed-ridden patients who have digestive disorders, urinary incontinence and urinating difficulty, such as in patients requiring long-term urinary catheters.

Therefore, community health nurses have a role in prevention of urinary tract infection in patients with limited mobilization by providing health promotion and prevention through education and supporting, emergency care management. In addition, coordinating to multidisciplinary teams is crucial to optimize appropriate guidelines for UTI prevention for this population especially when they are discharged from hospitals and return back to their community.
