A Figurative Language Analysis of Lukthung Songs: A Case Study of Tai Orathai’s Songs

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to classify and describe the kind of figurative language used in Tai Orathai’s songs and to examine figurative language used in Tai Orathai’s songs by identifying its cultural, connotative meaning against the background of related ways of life. The samples were hundred songs of Tai Orathai. All the songs were analysis based on two features: types of figurative language and cultural meaning.


 The finding showed that fifteen types of figurative were found; Metaphor, Repetition, Assonance, Allusion, Personification, Imagery, Metonymy, Onomatopoeia, Symbolism, Alliteration, Irony, Simile, Oxymoron, Rhetorical Question and Hyperbole. The top three in the rank were Metaphor, Repetition and Assonance accounting for 31.79%, 22.14 % and 10.00% respectively.  Furthermore, the songs sung by Tai Orathai reflected social-economic, life style, love and religion of Thai society.


The finding of this study can be useful for researchers who are interested in lukthung song or figurative language to adapt or can be used for study other kinds of music or other singers. Also this study helps listeners to understand deeper meaning of the connotative meaning and cultural meaning.
