The purpose of the study is to analyze the pattern and moves in Va Nursery Rhymes. The data of the study was collected from the book A Vas Folk Songs published in 1987. There are 124 folk songs in total. Eighty-six nursery rhymes were collected as the sample including orphan songs, lullabies, life songs, exhortation songs, and entertainment songs. Bhatia’s theory framework was used to analyze the rhymes. The pattern of moves and steps were found for each category and hereby as follows.
Orphan songs: Move 1: Setting the difficult scene (describe the suffering life); Step 1: Description of natural surroundings; Step 2: Description of life status; Move 2: Expressing inner feelings; Step 1: Blaming parents’ death; Step 2: Dissatisfaction of living situations; Step 3: Desiring parents’ care; and Move 3: Receiving the present life; Step 1: Charging with responsibilities; Step 2: Looking to the future.
Lullabies: Move 1: Description of nature and the surroundings; Move 2: Coax children into sleeping; and Move 3: Blessing the future.
Life experience songs: Move 1: Setting the scene referring to the title of the song; Move 2: Giving several tips of life experience; Move 3: Warning people to comply with the tips; and Move 4: Description of results.
Exhortation songs: Move 1: Setting the scene referring to the title of songs; Move 2: Exhorting children to comply with doing something; Step 1: Negative material examples; and Move 3: Blessing the future.
Entertainment songs: Move 1: Setting the scene referring to the title of the song; Move 2: Imitating the action or sound of the mentioned objects; and Move 3: Getting the knowledge or happiness.
Va nursery rhymes showed the rules, knowledge, fun and other features that occurred in Va people’s life, so that in each song the moves and steps were not same. The patterns of the moves and steps found in the study would provide guidelines of how Va nursery rhymes were organized. The composer of Va nursery rhymes, teachers and interested people could follow the certain models.
