Abstract

This article presents an argument that Plato opened opportunities for women to receive equal education as men did. The references used in a rational assessment to arrive at the aforementioned conclusion were identified in Plato’s concept of philosophy of education published in The Republic. Plato pointed out that education is one of the important elements of ideal society. The ideal society is stable when people, whether men or women, receive equal education opportunity. In addition, education plays a prominent role in screening people in the society to carry out one’s duty appropriately whether they are men or women. The survey of the aforementioned Plato’s concept indicated that one of the feminists’ demands associated with the issues of women and their education opportunity had important support from the perspective of Plato, an ancient Greek philosopher who ascribed importance to women and their education as well.
