The Model for Self-reliance Promotion of Ageing in Chiang Rai Province

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to examine the perception, manner, and needs in self-reliance promotion physically and mentally for ageing society of Chiang Rai Province, to develop the self-reliance promotion model for ageing society of Chiang Rai Province, to evaluate the self-reliance promotion model for ageing society of Chiang Rai Province. This mixed-method research was sectioned into 3 stages. 1) Examining the perception on changes, manner, and needs for self-reliance promotion physically and mentally of ageing society in Chiang Rai Province. This stage used questionnaire for data collection. 2) Developing the self-reliance promotion model for ageing society in Chiang Rai Province by using focus-group discussion with honorary experts and scholars.  3) Evaluating the self-reliance promotion model for ageing society in Chiang Rai Province by using questionnaire with key informants. The results showed that the elderly perceived at the highest level on their physical changes while the lowest level on their psychological changes. However, the elderly needed the self-reliance promotion on their psychological aspect at the highest level. The constructed self-reliance promotion model for the elderly was proposed as 3S MODEL. That model involved 3 key activities. Self–Awareness included health promotion and consultation. Self-Esteem included elderly club, local wisdom knowledge exchange, career promotion, and financial saving. Self-Learning included home visit, religion and belief, news literacy and communication skills using IT.
