บทคัดย่อ

อารมณ์ (Emotions) เป็นพื้นที่หนึ่งของการศึกษาทางสังคมศาสตร์และมนุษย์ศาสตร์หลายแขนงมาโดยตลอด กระนั้น อารมณ์เพิ่งได้รับความสนใจในฐานะประเด็นของการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ในโลกตะวันตกเมื่อราวทศวรรษที่ 1970 เท่านั้น อย่างไรก็ดี แม้ว่างานประวัติศาสตร์ก่อนหน้านี้จะสนใจมิติทางอารมณ์อยู่บ้าง แต่อารมณ์ไม่เคยเป็นประเด็นใหญ่หรือเป็นแกนกลางที่นักประวัติศาสตร ์ก่อนหน้านี้ศึกษาค้นคว้า หรืออย่างน้อยที่สุด ก็ไม่ใช่คำสำคัญที่นักประวัติศาสตร์เลือกใช้อธิบายงานเขียนของตนเอง


บทความชิ้นนี้มีเป้าหมายเพื่อศึกษาความเป็นมาของกระแสการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์อารมณ์ หรือที่เรียกกันว่า ช่วงเปลี่ยนผ่านของการศึกษาอารมณ์ในประวัติศาสตร์ (Emotional turn in History) และมุ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงวิวาทะเชิงวิธีวิทยาของประวัติศาสตร์อารมณ์ผ่านงานเขียนหลักๆ ของนักประวัติศาสตร์แนวหน้าของการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์อารมณ์ 4 คน ได้แก่ ปีเตอร์ เอ็น.และแคโรล สเติร์นส์ (Peter N. & Carol Stearns) วิลเลียม เรดดี้ (William Reddy) และ บาร์บาร่า รอเซ็นไวน์ (Barbara Rosenwein) เพื่อเป็นพื้นฐานสำหรับการทำความเข้าใจประวัติศาสตร์แขนงใหม่นี้ อันจะช่วยเปิดโลกทัศน์ของการศึกษาประวัติศาสตร์ไทยให้กว้างขวางขึ้นได้
