Comparative Study on the Efficacy and Side Effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. Extract Versus Simvastatin in Reducing Blood Lipids Levels on Hyperlipidemias Patient (Clinical Trial Phase II)

Abstract

Introduction: Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn was Thai herb that was valuable for a lot of medical profession such as reducing blood pressure, reducing blood sugar,defecating urine, restrained condition of prostatic hypertrophy and growth of prostate cancer, etc. Besides that Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn had antioxidant for reducing blood lipids levels.The purposes of this study were to compare the effi cacy and side effects of Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn. extract 1,000 mg. versus Simvastatin on reducing blood lipid levels.

Methods: A double blind randomized controlled trial study was performed in 64 subjects with serum total cholesterol values ranging between 200-300 mg/dl, serum LDL-cholesterol values ranging between 100-190 mg/dl. Sixty-four subjects completed the study, there were 32 subjects in the experimental (HSE) group and 32 subjects in the Simvastatin group. All the studied subjects were provided with standard diet and physical activity advice for 3 months.

Results: Hibiscus sabdariffa Extract and Simvastatin could signifi cantly reduced cholesterol and LDL, (p<0.05). Hibiscus sabdariffa Extract showed the mean ± SD of reduction 11.27 ± 27.65 (4.71%) / 8.74 ± 19.85 (5.65%),respectively. Simvastatin showed the mean ± SD of reduction 42.24 ± 27.03 (17.98%) / 31.89 ± 23.64 (20.85%), respectively. Hibiscus sabdariffa Extract had no effect on reducing reduce triglyceride and had noeffect on increasing HDL. On the contrary Simvastatin could signifi cantly reduced triglyceride, the mean ±SD of reduction was -30.62 ± 84.64 (15.5%) but no effect on increasing HDL. There were minor side effects but not threatened to life.

Conclusion: This study showed that Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn 1,000 mg / day for 3 month could reduce cholesterol and LDL but less than Simvastatin signifi cantly (p<0.05). There were no severe side effects so they were safe for human. However, next study should be carried out for the doses Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn, followed up side effect for long time and compared with placebo for bring about effectiveness of treatment hyperlipidemia continually.
