Generation Y Professional Nurses: A Challenge for Nursing Administrators

Abstract

Nowadays, Generation Y professional nurses are playing an important role in the nursing profession as it is an important force in nursing practice to take care people’s health. However, the literature review showed that Generation Y professional nurses were more likely to leave the nursing organization than other groups. Therefore, it is a challenge for nursing administrators to formulate policies or guidelines for the management of professional nurses to increase their potential, happiness in work and intention to stay in the organization. This article aims to provide an overview of management approaches for nursing administrators that can be applied to manage Generation Y nursing professionals in their organization. The management approach should be developed based on the characteristics, needs, and expectations of Generation Y professional nurses. Moreover, nursing administrators need to adjust their perspectives, provide a supervision and delegation plan, and develop the appropriate working systems and environment by applying suitable technology in order to achieve their full potential and happiness in the workplace.
