Abstract

The purpose of this study aimed to investigate mental health problems and factors related to mental health problems of the people living in the Makkasan Railway Slum Community, Bangkok.  A purposive sampling method was used to recruite 274 people aged 15-60 who lived in the slum community. The research instruments consisted of (1) Personal information and the (2) Thai General Health Questionnaire: Thai GHQ–12. The reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) was .79 and .82. Data were analyzed by descritive statistics and Chi-Square tests.


       The results revealed that 65.3 percent of people living in the Community had normal mental health status, 34.7 percent had mental health problems. The latter were categorized into two types which were social impairment (24.2%) and anxiety and depression (5.8%).  The factors significantly correlated with mental health status included religion, physical illness, drug use, family relationships, job satisfaction, beliefs about mental health problems, and stressful life events.


            The findings of this study can be used for planning to strengthen psychologic especially in vulnerable group in order to effectively provide services to the people and prevent them from mental health problem.
